Nollywood face-icon, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, is definitely one of the most versatile script interpreters in Africa. The fourth child in a family of seven, who was raised by a now-retired military officer, had a humble beginning.

There was a time she stopped schooling to hawk sachet water (pure water) and plantain.

Also, she was once a housemaid and did menial jobs to survive. But all that are history now. Below are four amazing things you should know about this bunch of talent fondly called Mercy Johnson.

1. Being a native of Kogi State, Mercy’s middle name is Ozioma, meaning a girl with good luck. She believes that the name is playing a vital role in the transition of her life from grass to grace, particularly how she miraculously got her first movie role, which eventually shot her to limelight.

2. Mercy didn't grow up to see her parents live together. In fact, she left her mother at age two to stay with her father, who was being transferred on regular basis for official reasons. The actress acknowledges that life as a barracks girl built her to be tough.

3. One of the strengths of Mercy as an actress is her ability to play crying and emotional roles. Meanwhile, sometimes when she cries in movies, it wasn't the script that makes her cry, but when she looks back to her humble beginning and the height she has attained now.

4. In early 2010, Mercy got to be among the first Nollywood stars to be endorsed by telecommunication giant, Globacom. She had already secured a four-year N50m deal. But two days to signing the contract, she was enmeshed in a theft scandal, forcing the company to cancel the deal.
